STAPELIA SPECIES 

Predominantly from South Africa, about 50 species.

They are low-growing, spineless, clumping-forming, leafless, four angled with toothed edges and soft stem plant. Stems grow erect branching mainly form the base and may develop a reddish color in strong sunlight. Often large five-lobed flowers which may be red, purple or yellow in color. Interesting banded flowers. Ideal spots are the garden pots or window-ledge.  They require sparingly watered and planted in a very freely – draining potting mix and given plenty of diffuse sunlight. Rioting may occur if they don’t get enough light. Low frost tolerates and keeps bone dry. Prone to attack by mealy bugs.
